I love GIUSEPPE’S EXPRESS in Pismo Beach for lots of things:  gelato, salads, wonderful desserts, deli meat and Italian grocery items–wine, olive oil and pasta–but also for their simple little dry panini cold sandwiches stacked up in the case just like they sell on the street in France.  I had two this week–with interesting results.

Me, Day 1:  “Can I get one of the Salami & Cheese sandwiches?  And can you put a shmear of mustard on it, please?”

GenX counter-girl:  Grabs sandwich, hands it through window to line-cook, who puts a bead of mustard under the lid, hands it back.  She wraps it in paper and hands it to me.

Me, Day 2:  “Can I get one of the Salami & Cheese sandwiches?  And can you put a shmear of mustard on it, please?”

GenY (commonly known as ‘Millennials’) counter-girl:  “No, but I can give you mustard.”  Wraps sandwich in paper and hands a 2oz to-go cup through the window to line-cook who fills it to the brim with mustard and hands it back.  She puts a lid on it and places the wrapped sandwich, the container of mustard and a plastic knife in a large plastic grocery bag (the horrible kind that is illegal everywhere) and hands it to me.  I turn around to the nearest table, unwrap the sandwich, open the mustard, lay a fat shmear on the top piece of baguette, re-wrap the sandwich and deposit the bag, the knife, and the container with 1.75 ounces of mustard in it into a nearby trash can.
